Call us today at 510-490-2187. History of AFD Drives and Current VersionsAFD Drives are a modern version of what was earlier known as VSD, or variable speed drives. These were mechanical and were operated on the basis of pulleys with adjustable pitch diameter. Today you can still find such systems in operation. But the advantages of solid state electronics has overtaken the field and you will find the ADF Drives of today have come to dominate the field. The name "variable speed drive" is still used today, but often as not will refer to the electronic versions now so popular. Similarly, VSD will also apply to the modern generations of drives. Currently there are four basic forms of AFD Drives on the market. There are some others, but they have not taken a share of the market due to unfavorable characteristics. The four that have are:
Brush-type Motor History: This motor was first introduced by Werner Von Siemens in Germany in 1856. But speed control by armature voltage was not introduced until 1930. An AC motor was used to drive a DC generator which, in turn, powered the armature circuit of a DC machine used as a motor. The DC output of the generator was varied by use of a rheostat. This solution was replaced in the late 1060s when advances in solid state electronics allowed direct conversion of AC to DC via thyristors. Adaptations and improvements on this is one version of the current AFD Drive technology. AC Vector Drive History: While the technology of vector control was known by 1970, practical applications were not available until the early 1980s. Early versions were limited in use. Only by the mid 80s, when the pulse width modulation inverter was developed did forward progress really start. Certain practical considerations which complicate the effective use of these devices has kept this version of AFD Drive in relatively small use. However, since it is highly efficient at high speeds and has a wide torque range that is constant, they are more and more popular for applications in the machine tool industry. AC Variable Frequency History: In 1924 this motor, as well as the spit phase and synchronous motors, was introduced by Nikola Tesla. Its most popular and useful feature is that it can be connected directly to three phase power. Only by running an AC alternator via a DC motor could variable frequency be achieved. This format was used extensively throughout the 50s, 60s and 70s. However, the brush-type DC system has always been much simpler and held the field until the mid 80s. At this time static (solid state) AC VSD Drives had come forward and taken over. The PWM chip set tipped the scales and now is responsible for most of these type drives built. However, some applications still can benefit from the earlier design. Brushless DC History: The first indication of this technology is found in 1962 when a machine was introduced with "solid state commutation." Full practical application was limited in the early years due to deficiency of available materials to produce an industrial version over 5 horses. Development of high voltage transistors and adequate magnetic materials in the early and mid 80s opened the way for the first large brushless DC motors. These motors can be "brushless" by virtue of reversing the construction. The armature carries the fixed magnets and the surrounding fields now are the windings that used to be on the armature. A magnetic sensor mounted on the shaft and tracks the magnetic position of the shaft fields. A controller monitors and responds to this data by routing the current to the correct electrical leads. Coupled with a capacitor bank and employing correct timing via the controller reproduces the action normally found in a brush type motor. And this is one version of the modern AFD Drive. AFD DrivesWhile all of the above versions are true AFD Drives, they each have their weak and strong characteristics which make them desirable for some or many, but not all, applications. Where one is weak, another may be strong. Careful study will reveal which is best for the application desired.
