A casual search will soon show that it is one of the more simple and basic of drives. VFD drives come in an incremental progression in size, capacity, purpose, and complexity of application. Categories include such things as Sub-micro, micro, general purpose, heavy duty, low voltage, and medium voltage. Specific categories also include things like soft start, HVAC, flux vector, sensorless, and H2O. Additional categories may be added by the company that develops it to fulfill a specific function. Micro VFD devices are usually limited to horsepower capacities and voltage service, though they will have the basic VFD features. This is primarily due to the niche it is designed to fill. They are small in size and usually intended in servicing a small and often isolated single motor. Their simplicity and size makes them easily installed and appropriate for installations where there is little room or need for more complex and higher capacity devices. They may be installed next to individual machinery in a plant having many small motor-driven devices that supply diverse functions. Servicing and oversight can be mostly automatic and relatively trouble-free. A Micro VFD may fulfill any of a number of other specific functions, so may be designed with those functions in mind. They may stress high torque, high speed, general purpose, vectorless, or any of a number of other applications; therefore not configured or constructed under only one parameter equal from one version to another. This is an advantage, because careful research will provide a Micro VFD that will give optimum performance for the use in question. One should evaluate ahead of time the factors in context with that use. Any competent sales department would be interested in knowing these details so a suitable Micro VFD could be provided. Such data will include things like motor HP, voltage desired, mounting location, and distance from motor to mounting area. Additional environmental factors such as to exposure to weather, chemicals and/or fumes, dust and dirt, or saltwater spray are often critical to plan for. Need for connectivity to a more advanced computerized control, management and monitoring system sometimes comes into play. Some versions of Micro VFD are not made for such connectivity, or may not be compatible with what is available in your location. (Though this is increasingly not an issues since current designs are more often designed with this flexibility in mind.) This is a question you should be ready to answer when purchasing for your installation. You would need to know the availability of local connectivity, what sort of system and software you already have or could use, and what type of connections it allows. Note also that the above considerations are usually applicable to all other forms of VFD devices. There will often be other additional data one has to be aware of as well when planning for a larger unit or set of units. This is especially true when planning for installations with complex arrays of coordinated equipment and variety of functions in a single system.
