Variable Speed Drive Development and Advantages

Variable Speed Drives has been an increasingly developed technology, especially in the last decade.  Many variations of Variable Speed Drive technologies exist today.  No one of them is perfectly suited for every application where variable speed is desirable.  One has to look at the actual performance features and characteristics to assess which will best suit the use intended.  The areas of specification, efficiency evaluation, and evaluation of power factor have come to the fore as especially challenging.  Certain forms of drives, like the vector-controlled drives, demand a high degree of mathematical coordination between drive and motor. 

Demand for increased efficiencies in power usage have forced Variable Speed Drive use into areas previously not considered for it.  More and more models are offered, and even medium voltage units and systems are being offered with a high rate of success.  Models servicing motors in the thousands of horsepower are now on the market.  Depending on idle time on a job and the innate efficiency of the Variable Speed Drive system or unit, savings of up to 50-70% can be achieved.  This is a result of capabilities allowing the Variable Speed Drive to adjust its power usage for light or heavy work demands.

Due to its affect on cost of power and efficiency of operation, Power Factor is a hot topic when it comes to Variable Speed Drives, systems and applications.  As mentioned, efficiency of today's electrical equipment is highly stressed.  The infrastructure is now creaking with the burden of all the demands placed on it in many of our urban centers.  This, in turn, also affects the more rural areas since power production sites are so closely interlinked within grids.  Design and engineering of drives having a high power factor provides immediate rewards for the consumer, power producers and agencies responsible for maintaining our society.  That 50-70% increase in efficiency of use is a big carrot in today's energy market.  Anything that further enhances this savings will be very welcome.

Because high frequencies are being used, Variable Speed Drives inherently create high frequency harmonics.  This drawback is more than compensated for by the increase in control of equipment, as well as the increased financial and power savings.  Certain technologies are being developed to assist in mitigating the drawbacks as demand puts more and more such drives into popular use.  Of these, special "chokes" and filters are now on the market.  Shielded cable designed for use with VSD drives is widely available and highly recommended.
