Call us today at 510-490-2187. Vector VFD DataVector VFDs are a sophisticated form of VFD that requires enhanced calibration and control in order to achieve their purpose. Vector VFD technology is based on methods allowing collection of valuable feedback. Other types of VFDs do not stress or use feedback for increased functionality. By managing the exact relationship of the power vector to timing of motor rotation and position of armature windings to field electro-magnets, torque and power are optimized. Moment-to-moment recalibrations are possible, so losses due to fluctuations in the various key factors are avoided. It is insufficient merely to tell the motor what to do and let it go at that. It must also include checking to see if it did it and then correct any imperfections. A Vector VFD can be set up in two different ways. One is a closed loop Vector VFD. The true closed loop version has sensors placed on the shaft. These give exact positional data that allows calibrations to occur on a continuous basis. Such changes in calibration are affected through the microprocessor. This is accomplished through exact adjustments to the duration of the electronic pulse. In turn, this will determine the exact amount of magnetic flux induced and control the adjustment plus or minus of the power necessary to advance or retard the rotation of the armature. This version can produce continuous torque even at zero speed. The other method of vector control is an open loop Vector VFD. In this Vector VFD the actual circuit is not a true open loop, but is closed. There is no sensor, so this system is often referred to as "sensorless". Tracking and adjustment of the motor is done through an algorithm incorporated into the microprocessor. The actual data used is made up of true experience recorded from operational parameters of the motor. Actual output (mainly current) is monitored. Corrections are made by evaluating past data and assumptions are produced that say certain changes will correct to certain parameters. Control is less precise in such a Vector VFD. On slowing down, it cannot be as accurate with its measurements. At zero speed no current or other characteristics can be monitored, so torque cannot be in control. This limits use of an open loop, or sensorless VFD, to applications that do not require full torque at zero speed. Use with tools like cranes and hoists is out. And certain pumps that require instant torque to maintain pressures within a system are also out. Many other applications are fine with either version of Vector VFD.
