VFD Cost Facts
If one looks only at the
purchase amount of his VFD Cost
this might put off the purchase. Admittedly, the
VFD Cost
is higher than a system built without the
VFD.
But hold on! Unit cost is not the only criterion. What about
other expenses that are incurred after a system is up and running?
There are several factors to consider before deciding if the VFD Cost
is too high.
Energy Savings:
Side-by-side comparisons with systems with and without a VFD produce
surprising results. A motor run entirely without any added control
misses the fine tuning available from a VFD.
VFD Cost
at the dealer may be higher, but operational costs, alone, easily make up
for it in a relatively short amount of time.
Example:
Fully
61% (13.53 kW) less power is consumed by running a pump 30% below rate of
free system flow instead of matching to the rate of that same flow.
Operate at this rate no more than 25% of a full day for 250 days
(approximate equivalent to a year of work weeks with a week of holidays
thrown in). Figure a cost of 6 cents/kW-hr. The savings would
amount to near $1,217 for the year. With a static head of 60 ft. (47%
of total head) to overcome savings would amount to $941 for the year.
VFD Cost
falls by that amount each year following installation.
Reduced Mechanical
Stress:
Systems are usually made with mathematically calculated parameters not
available in a simple motor installation. In-rush current is usually
controlled with a start-up algorithm designed to ramp up to speed while
preventing undue peaks in current that would reduce life of the motor.
Also, it prevents jerky starts that would stress armatures, belts, bearings
and other moving parts. Again,
VFD Cost
is compensated by increased system life, fewer service calls and parts
replacements, and less down time.
Increased Efficiency:
Often power factor correction can be included in the algorithm.
Efficiency goes from a standard .85-.9 for a motor to .97 with correction.
This enhances cost savings, but also helps reduce operating temperatures
that contribute to breakdown of components and insulation. Again,
savings in servicing and parts, along with less lost production time.
Energy Grooming:
Once the motor is operating with a VFD several enhancements to energy
monitoring and regulation are available. Surges, over-current,
over-voltage, under-voltage, input and output phase, short circuit, ground
fault, and other protections can be in place automatically.
Enhanced Sensing / Protection / Production:
Some
systems include features allowing accommodations for fluid or mechanical
pressure surges, empty wells or reservoirs (where a pump needs to be shut
down to prevent burnout), loss of prime, timed operations, sensing of and
response to interconnected operations statuses, and many more.
Access to Networked
Management and Programming:
Most VFD drives today incorporate features that allow computer connectivity.
This allows monitoring by managers and production personnel, automization of
whole production routines (as in a CNC device), and remote sensoring,
warning signals and protective response patterns. Clearly, such a
system accounts heavily for the extra

incurred before installation.
