This adjustable frequency equates to adjustable speed when coupled to a motor. Information regarding VFD Drives abounds on the internet. There are several alternate names for VFD Drives. They are also known as adjustable frequency drives (AFD), AC drives, variable speed drives (VSD), and inverter or microdrives. In VFD Drives frequency is adjusted with voltage, so these drives can also be referred to as variable voltage variable frequency drives (VVVF). Elements of a VFD Drive SystemVFD Drives usually are coupled with a controller, an AC motor, and an interface for an operator. The Motor: Some variations of single phase motors used with VFD Drives can be used, but most commonly the motor of choice is a three phase. These motors can be of two types. One is a synchronous motor. In this motor the rotor spins past magnets while the motor windings are energized by the alternating current and driven by a resulting magnetic field. The interaction of the fixed magnets and armature field creates the motion in the motor. They are considered to not have any "slip" since the speed of the rotor and speed of the moving field are the same. The rotor poles move at the same speed because they are connected to each other. Power is passed to the rotor windings via a slip ring and contact brush system. The second motor used with VFD Drives is the induction motor. In this one power is transferred to the rotor entirely via induction from field coils placed surrounding the armature. They are not considered synchronous as the speed of the rotor and speed of the rotating magnetic field cannot be the same. If they were, no current would be induced and the motor would not turn. Due to this feature, induction motors are a small percentage less efficient than synchronous motors. But the absence of brushes and sturdy construction of these motors makes them a favorite in industrial use. They also are often polyphase and coordinate nicely with the delivery of three phase power to industrial situations. Additionally, the capability of controlling speed through modern electronics adds to their popularity. The Controller: Modern electronics can be employed to create a rectifier circuit using diodes to translate AC to DC. This is then further converted to a semi-sinusoidal AC power that can be varied in frequency. There are several methods of controlling how this current will ultimately affect speed and torque. Each has its own strengths or weaknesses. However, ultimately the VFD Drive delivers proper current to the motor and desired service is achieved. The manufacturer will generally design using the best of the choices for the particular application in mind. The interface: The advent of microchips and computerized circuitry, along with a variety of forms of memory chips has revolutionized the field where it comes to motor control and delivery of desired service. Functions can be hard-wired or soft-wired into systems to create most any form of settable parameters. It is really up to the innovative spirit of the manufacturer of the various systems as to how well the system can accommodate the needs of the customer. The interface to a VFD Drive system may include dozens of options including on-off controls, speed controls, manual and/or automatic settings, parameter controls allowing variations chosen by the operator, automatic diagnostic and alarm systems, cross-system controls for other motors and coordination of those motors, and pretty much anything else a design engineer and computerization expert can imagine.
