They incorporate the same initial technology as VFDs, but can then be used to do phase conversions. The availability of solid-state electronics is revolutionizing this area of electrical use. Refined power control is accessible through the electronics in VFD Phase Converters. This, in turn, better protects and services the motor and the system it is hooked up to. Fewer problems with harmonics and imbalances will be incurred in VFD Phase Converters because the electronics can be made to compensate for such factors. The main drawback used as VFD Phase Converters is the necessity to be more careful to shield them from surges and other damaging factors. They are more susceptible to burnout since they do use sensitive solid-state components. They are usually powered by a three phase connection. Drawing power from a single phase connection then creates a situation in which four of six diodes on the rectifier are powered. This results in the need to double the size of drive to compensate. Use is confined mainly to three phase motor installations as they do not work well with most non-motor situations. They can be a plus in the right situation, but the wise customer will weigh the parameters against other phase converter options. They DO each have their uses and care should be taken to apply the right technology to the existing scene. Earlier Phase Converter OptionsPrior to VFD Phase Converters there were two other routes taken in phase conversion. Both are still in use today. The earliest version often used is a static phase converter. These do not actually provide three phase power, but will cause a three phase power current momentarily at start up, after which the motor continues to run on single phase. This lowers the functional horsepower of the motor and is more stressful on any motor used. A motor with a higher rating is needed when demand is for the rating it would provide at normal three phase levels. Such a motor will give about 60% normal under these circumstances. The second version is the rotary phase converter. These produce three phase power from single phase power. They are used specifically to provide a three phase load with reliable three phase power when only a single phase power supply is available. They are used for larger motors and equipment. The better versions of these provide balanced power and a reliable device that will give years of service. In a comparison of static phase and rotary phase converters, the rotary models come off quite well above the static models.
