Call us today at 510-490-2187. VFD Pulse DefinedVFD Pulse is an attribute of motor inverter, or variable frequency drives, arrived at by managing a series of electrical emissions called pulses. These pulses are a variation between full on and full off and enhance the ability of switches to deliver a refined degree of power to a device. When only partial power is needed this is an ideal method. In past practices rheostats and Variacs were used. But these methods, among others have their drawbacks. The rheostat wastes power by expending the unused portion as heat in its windings while the Variac is more expensive to produce. Most uses of VFD Pulse units is for varying speed of electric AC motors. Speed of the motor is directly measured by the frequency of the pulses. With this method the motor speed can be varied virtually infinitely, within the capacity of the individual motor. There are some drawbacks to use of high frequency drives. These must be accounted for by care in limiting length of motor lead cables to inhibit reflected wave patterns that will multiply incoming voltages. Some motor manufacturers also will beef up the windings of motors to be used with VFD Pulse units so as to resist failure of insulation and other components. Startup speed is sometimes also controlled so as not to overwhelm the motor with high inrush currents. Currently, VFD Pulse drives are arranged so that they produce a series of varied width pulses that will result in the construction of a sine wave. This sine wave is a map of the flux density in the circuit. While the actual pulse will have a square wave aspect to it, the lagging of the flux density in the device used will result in those corners "rounding off" to produce a smoother wave form when coupled with all the other pulses. This will also take the "full on" aspect of the pulse and allow it to fall within the only partially on form of the sine wave pattern. Internal flux density lag is again responsible for this. This is then used to operate equipment that can safely be run on sine wave electrical current. Of course, the more pulses in one cycle the truer the sine wave pattern will be. VFD Pulse technology has resulted in applications having six, twelve and eighteen-pulse VFDs. This form of electrical power control is called Pulse-Width Modulation (PMW). Many motor applications demand this level of accuracy of wave form to operate without damages to the motor. In the best VFD Pulse designs special filters will be used to enhance the conformation to a sine wave pattern. Pulse-Width Modulation basics are also employed in computers, telecommunication and data handling devices since they are patterned on the use of on and off signals to convey the information. Electric appliances using variable heating elements can be run with PMW tech where frequency of the pulse is varied through use of a variable knob. High frequency lamps and led lighting are also based on these fundamentals. Inverters used with wind or solar power and allowing connection to the power grid are examples of VFD Pulse devices.
