VFD Variable Frequency Theory and Use
VFD Variable Frequency
refers to electronic controllers for motors and systems where variability in
speed and/or torque is highly desirable. Solid-state electronics
allows altering motors speed and/or torque by altering electrical frequency.
Such systems are ideal for many applications. Today's energy market is
quickly expanding and demand for variability has never been higher. If
not for the advent of the transistor and its various spin-offs,
VFD Variable Frequency
in motors could not be realized.
Normally, motors are run at a reasonably consistent speed based on the
built-in sine relationship of AC current that is at a fixed frequency.
Worldwide, the two most common frequencies are 50 and 60 Hz.
Additionally, most
VFD Variable Frequency
use is with 3 phase motors, though single phase is used for some
applications. An AC motor is driven by the fluctuations in one to
three fields with sine wave features. This sine wave form reflects the
creation and collapse of the field(s) at a given frequency. The
increase and collapse of the field(s) produces the
induced currents that is the force driving motor armatures to turn.
VFD Variable Frequency
brings about conditions in a motor affecting the speed and/or torque.
When the frequency of the incoming current is changed from the common 50 or
60 Hz the rate of increase or collapse of the field is affected.
In turn, the rotational rate of the armature, or its
urge
to rotate, changes. If one installs a unit where the
VFD Variable Frequency
is deliberately controlled then one can also deliberately select the speed
and/or torque. That is the simplicity of VFD Variable Frequency

Applications of VFD Variable Frequency
Currently, four main
areas of application of VFD Variable Frequency are found.
The first is for speed
control. Any time one wishes to vary the rotational speed or
running speed of machinery the simplest method now is through this
technology. In manufacturing this can be seen in machining, polishing
and drilling operations where the speed changes may show up directly as
unwanted marks on the product, or possibly create damage to bits and
machining heads.
The second emphasis is
in torque. While speed may also be a factor, torque is important
since load resistance can back up on a motor and cause unwanted variations
in speed or power delivered to the system it is hooked up to. Motors
may even inadvertently be momentarily stopped by an excessively heavy sudden
load. These variations can also contribute to early failure of
equipment bearings, running surfaces and integrity of individual parts that
carry stress.
In pumping operations
using VFD Variable Frequency in the form of an
H20 drive VFD, consistency of fluid pressures is very often a prime operational
consideration. Since fluid controls are often regulated by pressure,
inconsistencies in pressure can prematurely or too frequently activate
automatic responses. Under some pressure circumstances the proper
automatic controls may not activate at all. This can lead to all
manner of production issues as well as possibilities of undue stresses and
early failure of pump and system parts. By controlling the torque (
via increasing the urge or lack of urge to rotate) pumping pressures can be
closely managed.
The third, and growing
use of VFD Variable Frequency is in power economy. By
controlling the motors and generators involved in transmission and
distribution of energy within the power grid a huge energy savings can be
achieved. Variable frequency technology allows motors and generators
to be put on idle where only a fraction of the normal energy to run them is
expended. They can be set up to automatically adjust for higher needs
only when the system senses these demands are increasing. And the
amount of adjustment can be gauged directly to the amount of need.
Motor speed can therefore be constant, while energy use can be diminished
proportionally to the difference between actual demand and full output of
the motor without VFD variable frequency control. For this reason,
this technology is now more and more incorporated into medium voltage
installations, such as substations and large industrial complex power usage.
The fourth application
can be found in starting systems for motors. By slowly ramping up
motor speeds a variety of unwanted stresses and conditions otherwise
incurred can be avoided. This is often referred to as a Soft Start.
Extreme stresses from jerky starts and adverse energy characteristics,
especially in-rush currents, are avoided. This saves bearings and
parts from excessive mechanical loads. It also avoids possible early
failure due to short-circuits or component burnout from repeated exposure to
temporarily high startup currents.
