In all instances they will apply universally to the same drives no matter what label is applied. Discussions of these can be found on various pages incorporated here on this website. The one reason that a different label than VSD will be emphasized is usually when a particular characteristic is being stressed. The most common ones (and the pages named for them as found on this website) will be VFD Drives (Variable Frequency), AFD Drive (Adjustable Frequency), VVVF Drive (Variable Voltage Variable Frequency), and AC Drives (Alternating Current). The use of AC Drive is generally accepted as referring to variable speed drives, especially when the drive is coupled with an AC motor. One should note that there are also variable speed DC drives. In the past, mechanical versions were available, but current state-of-the-art electronics allows for a very competitive efficient and serviceable drive. Whether it be a complex of machinery or simply one installation run with a dedicated drive, modern VSD technology fits the bill. One feature that is especially enticing is the opportunity to save large amounts of power through automatically cutting expended power while equipment and motors could be idling instead of using a constant amount of energy. An entire series of motors, conveyers, and other power-driven equipment can be run in concert through apt use of software. The right software can adjust running speeds, coordinate movement of products or manufactured parts, implement alarms and warning bells or buzzers, and a large number of other features and functions. One current example of this is in wholly automated automobile factories that can build up to five different models on the same assembly line simultaneously. Not only are belts, chains, conveyers and other motors operated through use of a VSD, but the special welding robots and other specialized equipment use servos that are connected to a VSD. There are even systems that allow collection of production and management data in real time. This vastly streamlines a business and saves large amounts of administrative time and money. In some cases it can even manage final packaging and distribution of products created within the manufacturing plant. Other applications of VSDs that are common are in: HVAC equipment where delivery of hot or cool air is demanded in variable relationship to the ambient temperature. Automated units will start, adjust, or stop fans and air circulation equipment. Water pumping installations where it is crucial to maintain an even water pressure while also assuring water is moved along the lines.
