Call us today at 510-490-2187. VVVF Drives ExplainedWhen a variable frequency drive operates the variation in speed is also accompanied with a variation in voltage. For that reason such drives are often referred to as variable-voltage variable-frequency drives or VVVF Drives. There are several other names used for these drives, but essentially they all are referring to the same thing. One such name is VFD Drive and another is AFD Drive. All are variable speed drives. They achieve their power conversion through solid state circuitry. The characteristics of an AC motor demand a proportional adjustment of voltage whenever frequency is changed. This results in the delivery of the original torque for which it was rated. The ratio must be constant for the motor in use. An offshoot of this datum is that deliberately altering the ratio will result in an altered torque. This may be an advantage in some applications. Such alterations are done in the controller and are a direct part of the drive design. Whether the VVVF Drive uses transistors, thyristors or IGBTs, they are used only as switches in an on or off capacity. Constant voltage and constant current drives also do exist. They use the same solid state technologies but rather than variability in mind. The object is to provide a high degree of stability while also incorporating features like slow start and control of inrush current issues. VVVF Drive AvailabilityModels of VVVF Drives come in a range of current and voltage ratings which match most 3 phase motors designed for mains power. Low voltage VVVF Drives are considered to be designed for the 110V to 690V spectrum. For medium voltage VVVF Drives the range starts with 60Hz at 2400/4162 volts or 50Hz at 3000 volts and may go up to 10 kV. Sometimes a transformer may be used to step up the voltage from a low voltage drive for a medium voltage load. Usually, medium voltage VVVF Drives are coupled with motors rated at 500 horses and up. VVVF Drive Installation ConsiderationsDue to the frequencies of the pulses used in VVVF Drives there are some precautions an installer must take and that the purchaser should know about before ordering and setting up his new drive and motor. Transmission lines have different impedance than the motor. Due to this, the pulses may tend to reflect from the motor terminals through the cable. Given a longer cable run voltages can build to as much as twice the rated load for the cable. Insulation failure, stresses on the motor and stresses on the cable can result. Additionally, the phenomena is "noisy" and may interfere when in an area with communication cables. For these reasons it is recommended to keep cable runs short, especially with higher horsepower motors, and use shielded cable to protect against interference in other lines. It is also recommended to avoid running cables near lines for other systems. Special filters can be added to suppress the reflecting of energy. The same phenomena also can bring about conditions in which high frequency currents created by stray capacitance allows a buildup and discharge of energy that can degrade the bearings.
